Is there a condition where the spinal cord goes through the middle of a bone at the base of the skull?

A chiropractor told me that my spinal cord goes through a bone at the base of my skull rather than around the bone. Is there a name for this? This was years ago and I’m sure I have the particulars correct. Thanks.

This is normal anatomy – the spinal cord come off of the brainstem and proceeds through the foramen magnum at the base of the skull. If it didn’t take this route, you would not be here today.

There is something called the Arnold-Chiari malformation, where the foramen magnum is too large and a portion of the brain and brainstem actually herniates (pass through) this hole, getting compressed, causing visual disturbances and headaches (usually when looking down).

Your chiropractor could not have diagnosed this without an MRI – the diagnostic modality of choice for such lesions.

Sorry to say, but your chiropractor needs to brush up on his anatomy.
