The Many Uses of Gold

Since native gold is a mineral and an element, it is highly prized by people mainly because of its attractive color, it is tarnish resistant and it has many distinctive and special properties, some of which are unique to gold. Its rarity, usefulness and desirability command a high price. But what is gold? Traces of gold amounts are found almost everywhere but extremely large deposits are found only in a few locations, some are even remote.

Although there are estimated about twenty different types of gold, all of them are delicate and rare. Hence, almost all gold found in nature comes in the form of the native metal. Gold develop or occurs in hydrothermal veins primarily deposited by ascending solutions such as disseminated particles through some sulfide deposits and in placer deposits.

Approximately most of the gold that is newly consumed or perhaps recycled each year is used in the production of jewelry. About 10% is used in coinage or in the financial stores of governments. The remaining 12% is being consumed in a wide range of other uses which include electronics, medicine, dentistry, computers, and honorary awards in the form of plaque, pigments, gilding, and optics. It has been known that, of all the minerals mined from the earth, none is more useful than gold. Its usefulness is derived from a diversity of special properties. It easily conducts electricity, does not tarnish, is very easy to work , can be drawn into wire, can be hammered into thin sheets, alloys with many other metals, can be melted and cast into highly detailed shapes, has an extraordinary exquisite color and a brilliant luster. It is considered a memorable metal that occupies a special place in the human mind.

In the first arrival of the Spanish explorers in the “new world”, they encountered the native South Americans. These two cultures are separated by a vast ocean. They had never touched one another; they spoke different languages and lived entirely different lives. But they had one thing in common-they both held gold in highest esteem and used it to make some of their most important objects. In the history of our planet almost every established culture has utilized gold to symbolize power, beauty, and purity and not to mention accomplishment.

Nowadays, we still continue to use gold for our most significant objects; wedding rings, Olympic medals, Oscars, Grammys, money, crucifixes and ecclesiastical art. The mass production of ornamental objects was probably the first use of gold over 6,000 years ago. Since gold is found in the pure state it is very easy to work and was probably the first metal used by humans. Pure gold is too soft to stand up the stresses applied to many items. Professional craftsmen finally learned that alloying gold with other metals such as copper, silver, and platinum would increase its durability. Ever since, most gold used to make jewelry is an alloy of gold with one or more other metals. Alloying gold with other metals changes the color of the finished products. The alloys of gold have lower value per unit weight than pure gold. A standard of trade known as the “Karatage” was developed to designate the gold content of these alloys.
